Current assumptions of Western bioethics pose significant challenges for US health care workers who hold to traditional understandings of what it means to be human — or even what is the purpose of medicine itself.
The assumptions also present significant challenges to our diverse patient population, where many minorities and refugees come from highly communal cultures. Western bioethics stands to be critiqued by these other cultural voices.
